Azerbaijan’s national league came to a close yesterday with the game starring Rabita and Azerrail whose outcome would have determined the silver medalists of the competition. The next-to-last match had indeed finished with Igtisadchi defeating Lokomotiv, so in the case Azerrail had lost in straight sets to Rabita, Igtisadchi would have clipped silver.
Rabita BAKU started the game without captain Natalya Mammadova who had got injured a couple of days before while rising star Polina Rahimova displayed a stellar performance for Azerrail. By claiming the first set 25-15, the winners of the 2011 GM Capital Challenge Cup confirmed their second place in the final standings of the league. After that, Azerrail played without any pressure and went up 2:0. However, Rabita did want to finish the season on a high note and with Sanja Starovic and Olga Ativi could draw the count. The Serbian libero of Rabita, Silvija Popovic, showed her great skills in defense and her contribution was really important for Rabita also in the deciding tie-break. Popovic was voted MVP of the game and the awarding ceremony followed with Rabita being crowned Azerbaijan’s champion for the fifth time and the fourth consecutive season. Natalya Mammadova got the “Fair Play” award to complete an already great year where she anchored her team to the second place in the 2011 CEV Champions League.
