Cyprus wins Small Countries Division final round in Andorra

Cyprus dominated once again the scene at the final round of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship – Small Countries Division that was organized this past weekend in the Principality of Andorra. Normally considered the pre-favorite for any event specifically conceived for the Small Countries, Cyprus had a flawless run there in Andorra clipping four games in a row to bring home the title. However, it was not that easy on Sunday as Cyprus and Luxembourg crossed their ways to determine who would have come out on top of the standings and there the Cypriot side around captain Nikos Kolas needed five long sets (25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 16-25, 15-8) before cruising past the guys mentored by Burkhard Disch.
Top scorer of this game was Gabriel Georgiou with 16 points but a good help came also from Serbian-born Vladimir Knezevic and Angelos Alexiou who totaled 13 apiece.
The hosts of Andorra were more than happy with their bronze medals that were basically “safe” after clipping their games with Scotland and Iceland in straight sets. They also put up good resistance in the matches with Cyprus and Luxembourg but were eventually defeated 1:3 by the winners and runner-ups of the competition.
